Powering Up to Weather the Storm: The Generator Advantage

In Mozambique, where energy security is often compromised due to natural disasters such as cyclones and severe storms, reliable power sources become essential. With unpredictable weather patterns and infrastructure vulnerable to damage, it’s not uncommon for power outages to last for extended periods. In these challenging conditions, having a generator on hand can make all the difference, ensuring that your farm, business, or home remains powered and operational, even when the grid fails.

“When it comes to choosing a backup power source, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution,” says Richard Bramford, Director at Saw Services LDA. “It depends solely on the requirements of the individual. Solar power is a sustainable and eco-friendly option, but its high upfront cost and dependence on favourable weather can be drawbacks. Battery backups, while more affordable, often fall short in capacity and longevity, typically lasting for only 3–4 hours before needing a recharge. So, for extended outages like those incurred during floods, generators offer a reliable and cost-effective alternative, providing unique advantages in specific scenarios.”

Bramford outlines five compelling reasons why generators like those of Husqvarna could serve as an excellent option for businesses and homeowners seeking a reliable backup power source:

  1. Energy Independence:
Generators allow users to take control of their energy supply, reducing dependence on the national grid. With flood waters disrupting electricity supply and leaving communities without power for extended periods, generators offer a level of energy independence that allows businesses and homeowners to mitigate the risks associated with power cuts.
  2. Scalability and Versatility:
Generators can be scaled to meet specific needs. Whether you’re a homeowner or running a small business, you can choose a generator that matches your power requirements. Additionally, they can be used in various environments, from urban areas to remote locations, where other power solutions may not be feasible.
  3. Readily Available Infrastructure:
Unlike renewable energy solutions that may require significant investment in infrastructure and/or installation, generators are more readily available, generally cheaper upfront and can be quickly deployed to restore power. This is especially helpful in places where other power solutions may take time to implement or not be as readily accessible.
  4. Dependability:
While fuel costs and maintenance are key factors to consider when using a generator daily over extended periods, these should be balanced with its long-term performance and durability. A well-maintained generator offers a dependable backup when the national power grid fails, unlike other sources that rely on weather conditions or grid infrastructure.
  5. Instant and Consistent Power Source:
Generators can provide immediate and consistent power (fuel-dependent) during extended load shedding, which can save small businesses from productivity losses associated with other backup options. It also ensures homes have power when they need it most, particularly in the evening.

Bramford emphasises, however, that generator safety remains paramount. “Generators should be placed in open areas to prevent carbon monoxide buildup and never connected to your electrical system to avoid backfeeding hazards,” he advises. “Any connections should also be made by a registered electrician, who will issue a certificate of compliance.”  Additionally, he says that it is also vital to keep both the generator and surrounding areas dry to reduce electrocution risks.

“Ensure the generator is turned off before refuelling and that fuel is properly stored at a safe distance from flammable objects. You should also have a fire extinguisher nearby which can be lifesaving in case of emergencies. Lastly,” Bramford concludes, “regular maintenance is key to ensuring the safe and smooth operation of your generator.”
