Johannesburg: Industrial lifting has been given a significant upgrade with the arrival of Konecranes’ groundbreaking S-series hoist. This innovative piece of machinery, lauded by Ian Grobler, Sales Manager for Konecranes and Demag South Africa, is poised to redefine load handling through its clever fusion of a cutting-edge synthetic rope, intelligent “Smart” features, a robust 20-ton lifting capacity, and adaptable design for various crane configurations.

Grobler enthuses that the S-series is a “perfect example of where advanced technology delivers a superior design.” He highlights the durable material choices, seamless hoisting capabilities, and enhanced safety features that not only optimize the movement of heavy loads but also significantly reduce structural stress and wear, leading to lower maintenance demands.

The S-series isn’t just about brute strength; it’s about intelligent engineering. A low headroom option expands its versatility, while a clever “thrust rocker” design contributes to reduced steel consumption and, consequently, a smaller environmental footprint – a testament to Konecranes’ commitment to sustainability. Grobler confidently declares the S-series an “industry game changer.”

Goodbye Grease, Hello Grip: The Power of Synthetic Rope

Before unleashing the S-series onto the market, Konecranes subjected it to rigorous testing, clocking thousands of hours to ensure both safety and longevity. The completely redesigned hoist structure promises smooth and stable lifting, minimizing strain on crucial components.

At the heart of this innovation lies the synthetic rope. Unlike traditional steel wire, this advanced material reduces wear on the drum and reeving system due to lower surface pressure and friction. Crucially, it eliminates the need for lubrication, translating directly into reduced maintenance costs. Handling is also made easier and safer thanks to its lighter weight, and the absence of fraying or sharp barbs drastically cuts the risk of hand injuries. Furthermore, the synthetic rope is less susceptible to common steel wire rope defects like bird-caging or kinks, maximizing uptime and minimizing replacement expenses.

Green Credentials: Lifting Responsibly

Konecranes has placed environmental sustainability at the core of the S-series design. The standard headroom model boasts a significantly lighter build compared to its predecessors, achieved through optimized design and material selection. This translates to a reduced consumption of raw materials and a smaller overall climate impact.

Grobler emphasizes that the combination of synthetic rope and guide rollers not only boosts performance and resilience but also curtails maintenance requirements. He further points to the in-house designed and manufactured gears and motors, coupled with inverter lifting technology, which enable precise motor speed control and optimized energy consumption during hoisting.

Adding a layer of intelligent oversight is TRUCONNECT Remote monitoring. This system provides real-time operational data, facilitating proactive maintenance planning, enhancing reliability, minimizing environmental impact associated with unexpected downtime, and ultimately extending the equipment’s lifespan.

Global Giants Embrace the Future of Lifting

Grobler proudly points to the adoption of the S-series hoists and cranes by leading international companies. Dutch hydraulic engineering and steel construction specialists Hakkers BV, Czech Republic-based Hitachi Energy (renowned for its stringent cleanliness standards in gas-insulated conductor manufacturing), and the UAE’s LTC Group (in their new production facility) have all integrated the S-series into their operations.

“These companies are a great testament to Konecranes’ investment in digitalisation and technology and our ambition to make work flows more efficient with solutions that decarbonise the economy, advance circularity and improve safety,” concludes Grobler, highlighting the S-series as a powerful symbol of the future of industrial lifting
