According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries (MAAP), Mozambique is producing 500 tons of honey annually and is setting its sights on expanding into international markets. The announcement was made during World Bee Day celebrations held under the theme ‘Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All’.

The Ministry’s beekeeping technician, Carla Manjate said beekeeping was gaining momentum in Mozambique, with 7,000 people now involved in the sector. “Our beekeepers are most interested in exporting our honey abroad. A key hurdle remains the lack of an accredited laboratory to analyse and certify Mozambican honey for export,” said Manjate.

She added, “We are currently working to identify these laboratories because the important thing is to have the parameters and encourage our laboratories to carry out the work of analysing the quality of our honey and its identity here in the country.” In conclusion, Manjate said that the Ministry is investing in technical training and designing a comprehensive development plan to ensure Mozambican honey meets the highest quality standards.
