In a remarkable testament to its forward-thinking approach, South Africa Wine, the unified voice of the local wine sector, has clinched a prestigious Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry Innovation Award. This significant recognition comes barely two years after the organisation’s inception, underscoring its rapid impact in revolutionising learning and development across the entire wine value chain through digital-first pathways.

The award celebrates South Africa Wine’s pioneering efforts in cultivating a digitally-driven ecosystem for skills enhancement, benefiting a diverse array of stakeholders from grape growers to exporters.

“This award confirms that South Africa Wine is not just responding to industry needs, we’re anticipating them,” asserted Rico Basson, CEO of South Africa Wine, brimming with pride. “Investing in digital learning platforms and structured career pathways means we’re helping wine businesses stay competitive and future-fit. This innovation matters because it’s not just about technology, it’s about people, growth and inclusive development.”

At the core of this acclaimed innovation is a free-to-use Learning Management System (LMS) developed and deployed by the organisation. This comprehensive platform boasts over 590 online learning programmes, covering everything from intricate export marketing strategies to highly specialised technical vineyard skills and crucial compliance training.

The uptake has been impressive. Currently, 2,600 individuals are actively utilising the LMS, a substantial leap from just under 2,000 a year ago. This digital transformation has dramatically expanded professional development opportunities, more than doubling the number of supported learners to over 675 in the past year alone.

Kachné Ross, South Africa Wine’s people and skills development manager, highlighted the tangible benefits. “It has reduced training costs dramatically by removing logistical barriers like travel and venue hire and enabled over 200 businesses to improve [human resources] development, compliance, and leadership skills while empowering a diverse group of learners, including women, youth and farmworkers in remote regions,” she reported. “We’re especially proud that over 40% of participants are women, and small producers now have access to world-class content without needing deep pockets or big-city access.”

The innovation was strategically funded through an industry levy system. This shrewd approach, coupled with strategic partnerships, has enabled wine sector companies to tap into national funding and meet their skills development targets at significantly lower costs than traditional training models.

Basson underscored the broader implications of the accolade. “This award is not just a win for South Africa Wine, it’s a win for every member who has invested in inclusive development, training and growth,” he affirmed. “It gives wine businesses access to industry-funded learning platforms and support, helps navigate grants and compliance, national and international advocacy and a voice in shaping the future of the South African wine sector. Our job is to help businesses grow, and to make it easier for them to invest in their people.”

The award serves as a powerful validation of South Africa Wine’s commitment to nurturing human capital, ensuring the industry remains vibrant, competitive, and inclusive in an ever-evolving global market.
