Leading engineering and scientific consultancy SRK Consulting (South Africa) has promoted principal environmental scientist Kirsten King and principal engineering geologist James Dutchman to partnership positions.

Based at the company’s Durban office, King has more than 30 years of experience in areas including environmental management, impact assessments, management programmes, monitoring, and auditing. She has also worked extensively in the field of licensing for waste, water, and atmospheric emissions, with experience in stakeholder engagement and navigating environmental legislation.

King has conducted her work in the mining, industrial and infrastructure sectors across many African countries, including South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Madagascar. She holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) degree and is a professional Environmental Assessment Practitioner registered with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa. She is also a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment South Africa.

Dutchman has almost 15 years of experience in geo-environmental and geotechnical engineering – as well as engineering geology and tailings expertise – focused on the mining and energy sectors. Based at the company’s Johannesburg office, he has also been extensively involved in tailings management, including the application of digital monitoring and surveillance methods.

He has worked internationally on projects in roles including planning, supervision, management, operational implementation, analysis, and reporting. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Engineering Geology & Geotechnics from the University of Portsmouth; he is a professionally registered scientist (PrSciNat) and project management professional (PMP).

According to Andrew van Zyl, managing director of SRK Consulting (South Africa), the calibre of these two new partnership appointments reflects the company’s dedication to professionalism and integrity.

“We have always prided ourselves on the depth of our team’s technical expertise, which is the basis of innovation in mining, industrial and public sector projects that are advancing modern African economies,” said Van Zyl.

He highlighted that SRK Consulting’s high standards rely on experienced and multidisciplinary teams of professionals who can deliver independence and rigour in their work.
