Johannesburg played host to a gathering of automotive industry leaders at the Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The exclusive event, a combined Automechanika CEO lunch and networking session, saw key players delve into critical issues shaping the future of the sector, including the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and the untapped potential of African markets.

The event, spearheaded by Messe Frankfurt South Africa, featured insightful presentations from industry luminaries such as Hiten Parmar, Executive Director at The Electric Mission, and Dr. Hugo van Wyk, Associate Director at EY.

Parmar highlighted the burgeoning EV infrastructure in South Africa, emphasizing the rapid growth of public charging stations and the increasing involvement of major players, including traditional oil companies, in this burgeoning sector.

Dr. van Wyk, leveraging the insights of Ernst & Young’s “Grow Beyond Borders” tool, presented a comprehensive analysis of African market opportunities. While acknowledging the challenges posed by factors such as ease of doing business and infrastructure development, he underscored the continent’s vast potential, particularly in terms of natural resources.

Greg Cress, Principal Director of Automotive and eMobility at Accenture South Africa, presented two distinct scenarios for NEV adoption in the South African market. The analysis, based on varying levels of government incentives, revealed that while hybrid vehicles are likely to dominate in the near future, the potential for significant EV adoption exists, particularly with the implementation of supportive policies.

Lightstone’s Chief Analytics Officer, Paul-Roux de Kock, provided valuable market data, highlighting the dominance of SUVs and crossovers in the South African market and the increasing influence of Chinese automotive brands.

The event concluded with an announcement of upcoming road shows across key African markets, including Botswana and Namibia, further solidifying Automechanika’s commitment to fostering regional growth and collaboration.

Michael Dehn, Managing Director of Messe Frankfurt South Africa, emphasized the significance of this gathering. “The insightful discussions and networking opportunities at this event underscore the collaborative spirit that drives Automechanika forward,” he stated. “As we prepare for the upcoming showcase at the Gallagher Convention Centre, we are confident that this event has laid the groundwork for a successful and impactful exhibition.”

The Automechanika CEO lunch and networking event served as a valuable platform for industry leaders to exchange ideas, address critical challenges, and explore new avenues for growth in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
