ZZ2 Eyes Global Growth Amid Cape Town Port Woes

South African agricultural giant ZZ2 is poised for significant expansion in the global fresh produce market, with new export opportunities emerging in China, India, and Japan. However, the company’s ambitious plans are being hampered by ongoing challenges at the Port of Cape Town, raising concerns about the future of South Africa’s fresh produce exports.

ZZ2, a century-old company with farms across South Africa and Namibia, cultivates a diverse range of produce, including avocados, tomatoes, apples, pears, and more. The company is expecting a bumper avocado harvest this year, with a significant portion destined for overseas markets.

“It’s been around six years that we have been struggling with the ports, but in the last two years it’s reached crisis proportions,” says Clive Garrett, ZZ2 Marketing Manager. “Our avocados have taken over 40 days to land in Europe. This has caused significant financial losses for the industry and severely damaged South Africa’s reputation as a reliable supplier.”

These delays, Garrett emphasizes, are not only costly but also threaten to stifle the growth of the South African agricultural sector. “Agriculture has the potential to create jobs, which South Africa desperately needs,” he says. “We dare not expand our production if the logistics remain a problem.”

Despite these challenges, ZZ2 is forging ahead with its global expansion strategy. The company is exploring alternative export routes, including Durban and Gqeberha ports, to mitigate the impact of Cape Town’s congestion.

“We are working closely with the South African Avocado Growers’ Association and the Department of Agriculture to open new markets,” says Garrett. “We are excited about the prospects of exporting to China, India, and Japan, and we are hopeful that the US market will soon be accessible to South African avocados.”

On the domestic front, ZZ2 continues to strengthen its position. The company recently received Shoprite Group’s Supplier of the Year Award, a testament to its commitment to quality and consistent supply. ZZ2’s focus on year-round production, achieved through cultivating in various regions across the country, allows it to consistently supply fresh produce to the South African market.

However, the success of ZZ2, and indeed the entire South African agricultural sector, hinges on the efficient and reliable functioning of the country’s ports. Addressing these logistical challenges is crucial for ensuring the sustainability and growth of this vital sector.
