AI and Robotics Redefine African Exploration Frontiers

CAPE TOWN— The traditional “blanket drilling” approach that once defined mineral exploration is rapidly being consigned to history as the 2026 Investing in African Mining Indaba showcases a sector pivot toward high-precision, data-powered discovery.

Industry leaders gathered at the Cape Town International Convention Centre this week highlighted how autonomous robotic rigs and artificial intelligence are not merely improving efficiency but are fundamentally de-risking the massive capital investments required to fuel the global energy transition.

The narrative in the exploration space has shifted from physical labour to sophisticated validation, where technology provides the bedrock of confidence for institutional investors. Hexagon Mining Division President Dave Goddard noted that modern drilling has evolved into a discipline of confirmation rather than speculation, with advanced analytics now essential to assess the economic viability of a deposit before the first major capital is deployed.

“Technology needs to provide enough information to the person making funding decisions that they feel confident there will be a return on investment. Confidence comes from the data,” Goddard stated in a media briefing.

This sentiment was echoed by Kendall Cole-Rae, expert in residence at Fleet Space Technologies, who emphasised that the urgency of the critical minerals race has forced a merger between traditional geological expertise and non-traditional data architecture to increase the probability of success.

The human element of the mining value chain is also undergoing a radical transformation, with experts predicting the emergence of a new professional class: the “geo-data scientist.” Professor Glen Nwaila, Director of the African Research Centre for Ore Systems Science at the University of the Witwatersrand, likened the current technological leap to the aviation industry’s transition, where operators moved from manual control to high-level supervision of autonomous systems.

“A key challenge in hard-rock mining remains the time lag in obtaining Measure While Drilling (MWD) data. That’s why we need more immediate feedback loops for effective decision-making. We drill to reduce uncertainty, to gain confidence,” Nwaila observed. This shift suggests that the future driller will function less as a manual labourer and more as a quality control officer, utilising machine learning to detect geological shifts in real-time and adjusting parameters to optimise both safety and output.

As the Indaba is set to conclude on February 12, the consensus among delegates is that Africa’s ability to bridge the gap between its vast geological potential and actual production hinges on this digital modernisation.

By adopting remote operations and automated manual processes often borrowing heavily from the more digitally mature oil and gas sector African explorers are positioning the continent to deliver the strategic resources required for a sustainable global future.
